3/13/2011 Bout @ Burlington recap

On Sunday March 13th, The Quadfathers took to the road for a closed door bout with the Burlington Bombers men's roller derby team. Skating were:

Special thanks to Itty Bitty Bastard and Cat Scratch Beater (also both of CNY Roller Derby) for helping us out with our impromptu merch table.

The event was run as a fully staffed normal bout, and was held at the Sports and Fitness Edge, a multi-use sports facility in South Burlington which also sponsors the Bomb Quads league. As one of the Bombers guys put it, referring to the rubberized athletic floor for roller skating, "It sucks the soul out of you!", and he was 100% correct. While juking and fast lateral movement was a pleasure, any endurance we thought we had going in was quickly zapped out of us, legs first:)

The Bombers pulled out to an early lead for the first few jams as we got our bearings and developed some strategy.

At the half the score was still tight, with the Quadfathers only leading by around 14 points.

The second half started with 3 Quadfathers players already having accrued 3 minors each, and so Slay West used some strategic poodleing in order to get penalties cleared without suffering huge losses to short lineups. The Quadfathers quickly pulled out another 30 points into the lead, and then stayed well in the lead for the rest of the game. The final score was 156-64.

Big thanks are due to the Bomb Quads’ ref and NSO crew for recruiting all kinds of help to fill out the staff for this scrimmage. There were officials from the Bomb Quads, GMDD (good seeing you again Starslayer!), Plattsburgh, Central VT, and New Hampshire (someone correct if we’re wrong or missing anyone, please!). Officiating for a bunch of loudmouth guys who also ref is always a challenge, and these girls and guys truly did a good job of holding it together and keeping things under control.

We all had a wonderful time and the Bombers were great hosts. We hope to face them again this season and with any luck we can convince them to come down to Utica to fill our 8/13 home double header with CNY taking on GMDD…..NY vs VT battle royale!

2011-02-26 Scrimmage with Central New York Roller Derby's All-Stars

 On Saturday 2/26/11 The Quadfathers were happy to host CNY Roller Derby's 'CNY All-Stars' travel team for a scrimmage during our practice time. The scrimmage was made extra interesting by the fact that each team had the other team's coach competing (Die-lon and Slay West).

The final score had the Quadfathers 66 to CNY All Stars 141.
The score stayed pretty even throughout the first 5 or so jams, but ultimately penalty trouble killed the Quadfathers as we gave up 30+ points in 2 power jams and then continued to accrue penalties while the All-Stars skated very very clean with almost no penalties. However, our goals of enhanced teamwork and pack awareness were definitely met and it was a very good learning experience.

Our Season So Far....

Just an informal update to let you know what our season is looking like so far. Mark your calendars! We're going up against some great teams this season, with more to add soon.
We'll be adding a home date or two and annoucing the matchup for July 30th soon, and we'll make a more formal announcement with a graphic and all that once things are finalized...

Our Next Bout! April 2nd in Albany!

We're excited to announce that on Saturday April 2nd The Quadfathers will take on Capital District Men's Roller Derby's Trauma Authority as part of a double header event with Central New York Roller Derby's CNY All-Stars vs the Albany All-Stars. Get on the facebook event page and tell them you're coming!

Albany has been packing the house at the Washington Ave Armory for their bouts, and this one is going to be crazy. If you havent been, the venue is a great place to watch a bout. We foresee a huge crowd, so get your tickets in advance! (via Ticketmaster.com)

This is the public debut of men's derby for the capital district (which is enough reason for you ALL to go, riiiiight?!?!?),  along with a long standing rivalry between Albany and CNY for upstate bragging rights after a nail biter 1 point game at last year's Empire Skate Showdown.

So please come out and cheer on all the boys as we help show the city of Albany what men's derby is all about!!

Introducing our coach, Slay West

The Quadfathers are excited to announce that Slay West #13 of Central New York Roller Derby is now coaching the team. Slay is the Coaching & Training chair for CNYRD, along with the captain of the Blue Collar Betties, and has years of experience in team sports. Plus in 'real life' she's an athletic trainer and god knows we can use someone with medical training on board with the way we play ;)

Slay will also have some guest helpers from CNYRD coming in to show us some moves, and we are grateful for the opportunity to have someone with her experience help us learn to play as a team and push ourselves that extra mile.

Now Recruiting for 2011 Season!!!

The Quadfathers are looking for new skaters!
Already skate? Great, you sign a waiver and we can jump you into practices anytime and learn-as-you-go. We've got loaner gear and skates available for you to try it out.
If you decide you like it and want to stay, dues are $20 per month and insurance costs $45 for the year.

New to skating? Most of us were too! We are excited that CNY Roller Derby is once again allowing us to have our new skaters jump into their very well organized new skater training class. We will be announcing dates soon, but it will kick off with a meet-and-greet, open skate night at CNYRD's (and our!) soon-to-be-announced new home space in Utica sometime in late February. Following that, there will be new skaters classes Wednesday nights from 7-9 and Saturday mornings from 10-12. During the time you are part of new skater training, you pay $30 per month to CNYRD for their training. A Quadfathers rep will be at most new skater practices to help out ans answer questions.

The team practices Saturdays from 12p-3p, and new skaters are encouraged to stick around after the 10a-12p practice and get to know the team, help out with drills, and watch practice.

We have an exciting season shaping up, so get in NOW!
